Why take a Beginner Course?

If you’re completely new to Italian or are still learning the basics, our Italian A1 Beginner course is your ideal starting point. You'll join live, small-group classes where our certified teachers will walk you through the basics and give you a chance to practice so that you can start speaking with confidence from day one.

Italian A1 Course Overview

After completing the Beginner course - our Italian A1 level program designed in accordance with the CEFR international standard - you'll be able to confidently:

  • Use familiar everyday expressions to cover your fundamental needs - like ordering a meal.
  • Introduce yourself, ask and offer simple personal details - like how old you are and where you live.
  • Engage in simple and slow-paced conversations with an Italian speaker, relying on the other person help.

Program Structure

The A1 Beginner program consists of three 12-lesson chapters developed to get you to understand and use everyday expressions to cover primary and concrete needs.

    1. Lesson 1 • Buongiorno!

      You’ll learn how to say “my name is” and how to greet people during the day.

    2. Lesson 2 • Ciao, mi chiamo Diana

      You’ll learn how to introduce yourself and how to spell your name.

    3. Lesson 3 • Di dove sei?

      You’ll learn how to have a simple conversation about where you and others are from.

    • Greet people and introduce yourself

    • Introduce people you know to others

    • Say where you are from and where others are

    • Talk about simple activities that you perform in daily life

    CLASS SYLLABUS
    1. Lesson 1 • Ciao, come stai?

      You’ll learn how to ask others “how are you?” and express your feelings and needs.

    2. Lesson 2 • Al bar

      You’ll learn how to order a coffee and pastry in the morning at an Italian bar.

    3. Lesson 3 • Facciamo uno spuntino

      You’ll learn what Italians have as a mid-morning snack and how to order something to eat.

      You’ll learn how to describe everyday life and the activities you perform daily.

    2. Lesson 2 • Una giornata in ufficio

      You’ll learn how to talk about your everyday work routine.

    3. Lesson 3 • Nel mio tempo libero

      You’ll learn how to talk about your hobbies, what you like and what you do not like to do during your spare time.

    • Talk about your everyday life and spare time habits

    • Describe for family members and the festivities you spend together

What You'll Learn

Communication Skills

By the end of the A1 level Italian program you'll be able to:

  • use basic greetings and introduce yourself and others;
  • tell where you and others are from;
  • talk about your family, friends and collegues, describing thier appearances and personalities;
  • talk about your favorite foods and make simple orders at bars and restaurants;
  • complete basic transactions at a hotel, including chacking in and chacking out;
  • describe your home, your city and give simple directions;
  • talk about your daily activities, and arrange meetings with friends and collegues;
  • talk about your hobbies and interest and make plans for fun activities with your friends;
  • describe current weather conditions and make plans for activities and trips according to the weather forecast;
  • describe past travel experiences and family holidays and festivities;
  • talk in general terms about your health and describe your symptoms to a doctor;
  • discuss common products and make basic purchases.

Vocabulary

You'll expand your vocabulary on the following topics:

  • greetings;
  • countries and nationalities;
  • numbers;
  • professions;
  • people appearance and personality;
  • food, meals, and kitchen items;
  • house rooms and forniture;
  • city streets and services, and means of trasportation;
  • touristic landmarks and vacation accomodations;
  • hobbies and leisure activities;
  • sasons and weather;
  • year around festivities and holidays;
  • family members and celebrations;
  • health issues;
  • shopping and colors.

Grammar

The A1 program grammar includes the following definitions and structures:

  • gender and number of nouns
  • formal and informal speach
  • definite and indefinite articles
  • subject, and object pronouns
  • qualifying adjectives (bello, brutto, interessante)
  • adjectives and pronouns: possessive (mio, tuo, etc)
  • demonstrative (questo, quello, etc)
  • quantifier (poco, molto, etc), and interrgative (chi, che cosa, etc)
  • numbers
  • prepositions
  • tenses of the verbs to be, to have, modals, regular in -ARE, -ERE, -IRE, and main irregular varbs:
  • indicative present • indicative simple past • informal imperative
  • form of courtesy request (vorrei)
  • affirmative and negative adverbs (si, no)
  • adverbs of time and frequency (prima, dopo, spesso), place (qui, sopra, sotto), quantity (poco, molto) and quality (bene, male)
  • conjunctions (e, ma, perché, quando)
